Greetings. We are glad you have joined us today.
Please let me introduce us to you. My husband, Jeffrey Smith, has a background in theatre, business, and education. I have a background in retail, communications, and education. So, how do these backgrounds create Downtown Cowtown at the Isis Theatre? Well, it's kind of a long story.
We both have been involved in various theatre productions from early elementary school into adulthood, but we took different routes along the way. While I moved toward singing and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas Wesleyan University, Jeff dove into every aspect of theatre and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. (He has since obtained his Master’s in Education in Administration from Lamar University, and he is currently working on his Doctor of Education in Learning and Organizational Change from Baylor University.)
I worked various part-time retail jobs while attending college then worked for a now defunct company that created physical t.v. listings for customers throughout the U.S. Jeff moved to the east coast to pursue full time work in theatres and traveling shows. He even toured with the musical Oklahoma! for a year. Once he returned to Texas, he worked in various aspects of Restaurant & Food Management.
After several years, life led us both into public secondary education. I began teaching Marketing Education and English in a local school district, and Jeff began as an assistant Theatre director. 20+ years later, I taught 17 different subjects in two high schools and one middle school, while Jeff became the Theatre Director & Technical Director for five high schools then he moved up to administration in two high schools. Oh, and somewhere in his spare time, he created a dinner theatre inside a barn.
December 2016, after much prayer and discussion, we decided to follow our own advice we'd given to countless students and follow a dream. We founded BendOverBackwards, LLC (we've always bent over backwards to help others).
December 1, 2017 we purchased the 100+ year old New Isis theatre and began the uphill climb to where we are today. In 2018 and 2019 we researched funding opportunities and the correct construction company for our project. The beginning of 2020, pre-COVID-19, our renovation for Downtown Cowtown at the Isis began. We will be open by December 2020.
Tri-North Builders are our construction company, Mr. Arthur Weinmann is our architect, and Mrs. Kathryn Fullbright is our Technical Director/Manager.
We could not have gotten this far without the help, support, and assistance from our family and many, many people. Thank you, each one, for your love, patience, support, prayers, and assistance!
